What is a Read-a-thon? A Read-a-thon is a fundraiser that encourages students to read as well as raise money. Students do not sell anything but get pledges based on how much time they will read in a two week period. During those two weeks, students log the time that they read at school, home, or anywhere they can catch a few minutes. At the end of the time, students go back to the individuals who pledged money to collect what they have earned from reading. There are prizes for top readers as well as top money raisers. All students can earn prizes based on how much money they collect. When all money is collected and turned in, there is a Read-a-thon celebration held honoring those who read the most and who collected the most money. Each year students, parents, and the community support the Read-a-thon overwhelmingly. It is truly the best of both worlds: a safe way to raise much needed funds for the school and encouraging children to read and hopefully learn to love reading. |
