Accelerated Reader (AR) is a reading incentive program for all students attending Collierville Elementary. In the AR program, students’ individual reading levels are established by STAR testing. The program is designed to promote individual reading, improve the student's critical thinking skills and build the intrinsic love of reading.

The program itself is simple:

·  Students read a book from the AR Practice Quiz List

·  Students take the Reading Practice Quiz on the computer

·  Student and teacher receive feedback to direct ongoing reading  practice.

CES School Wide AR Incentive Award Program

80% or Better Drawing- As a student completes an AR test with a score of 80% or better, they can place their name in a drawing for prize. The classroom AR Coordinator will draw names every 2 weeks. All names for the drawings stay in until the end of the 9 week period.

First Grade:         7 names are drawn every 2 weeks

Second Grade:     5 names are drawn every 2 weeks

Third Grade:       5 names are drawn every 2 weeks

Fourth Grade:     3 names are drawn every 2 weeks

Fifth Grade:         3 names are drawn every 2 weeks

AR Most Improved Reader-At the end of the 9 week period, the teacher will select one student as the AR Most Improved Reader.

Individual and Classroom Point Goals-The teacher will determine individual and classroom point goals for the 9 week period.

·     If the classroom AR Point goal is reached, the class wins a popcorn and sprite movie party.

·     If the student’s individual goals are met, the student will get to place a “scale” on the Dragon located in     the CES Library.   We will also have another reward for all the students who meet their Individual 9 Week AR Goals which is still to be determined. Individual goals will be based on STAR testing, minutes available to read per day, and ability to take AR tests.

Parents will receive a STAR Diagnostic report with their child’s current ZPD (reading level range).

*A ZPD note card will help in selecting appropriate level AR books. Books which are part of the CES Accelerated Reader program can be found in the school library, at the Collierville Burch public library, some even in the classroom or at home.  The AR books in the school library will be easy to find. All have an AR sticker on the spine and a label on the front cover with the point value for that book. If you have books at home, you can check to see if it has a corresponding AR Practice Quiz by clicking on the above link.

Click here to find out if your book is an AR book. You can find books in a certain interest area, books based on Author or Title, and books specifically in your child's reading level.

You can help by reading to and with your children every day. The more children read the more their reading improves! Encourage, cheer on, pump up, have fun, and motivate your child to READ!

CES is committed to building the love of reading! With Accelerated Reader, students will read more, thereby becoming better students.

As with anything else that requires practice, the more children read the more their reading improves.  While AR is not designed to replace our in-class, teacher directed reading programs, we are confident that those children who regularly participate in AR will be the ones who are showing the most improvement in their reading skills.

Thank you for encouraging your child to participate.  Please contact Cathy Bertram, by clicking the link, if you should have any questions.
